San Francisco Cruise Port and Terminal Information

During our last visit, we found the port process extremely slow due to a lack of staff. Onboard, we met many Californian residents who used the port often and said it was always slow. SFO is about 16 miles from the port and will take 35 minutes by taxi or rideshare. Alternatively, the latter takes 45 minutes to drive the 20-mile distance. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Port's cruise shipping operations were paused for 19 months (March 2020 thru October 2021). In the event of inclement weather, staff try to accommodate those who might arrive early.

The Japanese company has installed such shore-power systems in ports Los Angeles CA, Juneau AK, Goteborg, Travemunde, Livorno, Genoa. For 2018 were scheduled a total of 82 ship calls and estimated ~300,000 passengers. Inside the main San Francisco cruise terminal, there’s a seating area on the second level.

The cruise ship terminal at Pier 27 is about a 20-minute walk on flat pavement from Fisherman’s Wharf. Steam powered machines called "paddies" were eating away at the sand dunes and rock hills, especially Telegraph Hill, a few blocks west of the filled zone. Temporary steam train lines carried the earthen fill for dumping onto the mudflats.

A couple of options include Impark, the 80 Francisco Street Garage and Anchorage Square Garage. We suggest checking with the garages in advance for availability or reserve online. Don't believe what Google Maps tells you -- there is unfortunately no parking directly at the San Francisco cruise terminal. There are other options available but keep in mind that, because the port is in a popular location for locals and visitors alike, parking lots can be expensive. From San Francisco International Airport to the cruise port or hotels, taxis, ride-sharing services, and private shuttles are easily accessible. Some hotels provide shuttle services, and there are also dedicated shuttles available specifically for cruise passengers.

The round-trip itineraries (operated between March 2013 and April 2014) visited ports in California, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico Riviera. The terminal has a new shore power technology which allows equipped cruise liners (like Princess’ or Carnival's vessels) to use the city's grid power system instead of their diesel engines to supply onboard services while berthed/docked. This innovation reduces the ships’ emissions at the cruise terminal. If you're parking nearby, you can drop off your luggage and your party at the applicable San Francisco cruise terminal before parking your vehicle. Private cars, taxis and car-share vehicles are allowed to enter the ground transportation area for dropping off passengers. He was also a pioneer in developing the fish industry on the west coast and went on to be known as the "Fish King".

Bathrooms at the Port of San Francisco

San Francisco is the homeport for Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruises. We never tire of the fragrant, clean piney scent of giant Coastal Redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument just 30 minutes from Fisherman’s Wharf. The redwoods massive height reminds me of an outdoor cathedral where sunlight filters through the branches. The fresh earthy scent and peaceful environment are great for the soul.

It gives easy access to Union Square, Bay Cruises, and Coit Tower. The technology (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plugin directly to the grid which allows full onboard operations without using the diesel engines (being shut down right after docking).

The city, acting through the Port of San Francisco, launched the Embarcadero Seawall Program to improve seismic performance, provide near-term flood protection improvements, and plan for long-term resilience and sea level rise adaptation along the Embarcadero. Much of the Belt Railroad's right-of-way was removed following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and replaced with streetcar tracks now used by the San Francisco Municipal Railway. The Belt Railroad Engine House and Sandhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 13, 1986. Commodore John D. Sloat claimed California for the United States on July 7, 1846, during the Mexican–American War, and Captain John B. Montgomery arrived to claim Yerba Buena two days later. In 1847, the first American alcalde, Lt. Washington Allon Bartlett changed the name from Yerba Buena to San Francisco, "so that the town may have the advantage of the name given on the public map". The earliest development of a port in San Francisco, two and a half miles east of the Presidio, was under the Mexican regime, begun in 1835 as the town of Yerba Buena.

Both the Ferry Building and the Southern Pacific Building at the foot of Market Street were built upon thousands of Douglas-fir piles, up to 135 feet (41 m) deep. The first landing place on the north-eastern tip of the San Francisco peninsula was a rocky promontory below Telegraph Hill later known as Clarke's Point that jutted into the San Francisco Bay at the line of what is now Broadway and Battery Streets. Yerba Buena Cove swept inland from the subsequently named Clarke's Point to as far as Montgomery Street to the west, and further south and east to Rincon Point at the south of Market area at the foot of Folsom and Spear streets. While Pier 35 served as a San Francisco cruise terminal for many years, today, most ships dock at Pier 27 due to its new facilities. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport provide the nearest airports to the cruise terminal. If you’re looking at cruises from San Francisco, the port of San Francisco is an excellent starting or ending point, with easy access to many city attractions, including the iconic Alcatraz Island and Fisherman’s Wharf.

The federal government in 1922 began dredging a 40-foot channel through the Bay's outer bar in at the entrance to the harbor after 1922 and the dredging of Islais Creek with the so-called reclamation of 30 acres (120,000 m2) of adjacent creek tidelands. San Francisco cruises often range from 15+ nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. For a taste of fun, flavor and fiesta, sail to Mexico with Princess. On a cruise from San Francisco, dive into adventure in Cabo while snorkeling beside sea turtles and kayaking along the Sea of Cortez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or take the day to relax on one of the unspoiled beaches where sun-kissed sand and crystalline waters leave you feeling recharged.

This project was followed by other wharves built below Broadway and Clay streets, and at Commercial street. While this port sees fewer vessels than the Los Angeles cruise ports further south, the terminals can accommodate up to three cruise ships at once. Those embarking at Pier 35 will be close to the popular Pier 39 attractions. The port of San Francisco has a few piers, including a new cruise terminal – the James R. Herman at Pier 27, which is located in the Embarcadero district San Francisco. Located close to shopping, restaurants and the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf, ...

Royal Caribbean, Oceania, Silversea, Holland America, Celebrity, and Regent stop in San Francisco while repositioning to other destinations. Guests using the terminal will have access to the port’s free Wi-Fi. Should there be multiple vessels in port (which doesn’t happen often), the port may utilize Pier 35 further down The Embarcadero. It offers spacious rooms near the Ferry Building and easy access to Alcatraz tours.
